Meet Shaggy...
our newest family member.
He's a guinea pig.
We're lucky to have Shaggy. Unlike most g-pigs, he came to us in a very unique way.
At the beginning of the year, Dane was complaining of multiple headaches. After giving him a haircut, I discovered a small growth. Each week the growth would increase at a steady pace along with the headaches.
To keep other people from staring at his new found growth, we let Dane's hair grow extra long to cover it up. Despite Jenn's persistent pleas to go to the doctor, Dane was confident there was nothing wrong. "You can't hurt a Gilson in the head. Whatever it is can't get through this head."
Jenn was still worried about Dane's trip to California - the increasing headaches might make the truck trip back dangerous. On the way back, Dane had to pull over and stop due to a splitting headache. After an hour of sleep, Dane rubbed his head and found the growth 'squeaking'. A quick look in the rear-view mirror showed a guinea pig sticking out off the side of his head.
He immediately called Jenn and told her the situation - to which she fainted and Debany wrote down everything Daddy said and gave it to her mom when she came back to. Dane had no choice though but to stop at the nearest grocery store and pick up some carrots, peas, and leafy greens for the trip home. Not for himself.
A few weeks later, the guinea pig seemed stable enough, and Dane confident enough to go through separation surgery. Porter was there holding Daddy's hand through it all -- and even did the final inspection after it was all stitched up.
Unfortunate consequence to surgery is the shaving of hair around the incision site. Keeps the incision clean, you know. So here's a picture of Dane's haircut from the delicate surgery. The doctors did the best they could to make it look like a normal haircut.
So, Dane came back to us with his ears on straight - to which they were a little off-centered due to our new-found family member.
Here's Porter doing another inspection of his Daddy's nose.
